Landscape Lighting in Clayton, Missouri

Bring your Clayton home to life after dark.

Why we love serving Clayton

Clayton is the seat of St. Louis County and one of the most architecturally rich residential markets in the region. Although it has the bustling downtown business district everyone associates with the city — corporate headquarters, towering buildings between Forest Park Parkway and Maryland Avenue — Clayton is actually 80% residential, and the residential neighborhoods are where some of our favorite projects happen.

Most Clayton homes were built between 1900 and 1950 in period revival styles — Tudor, Dutch Colonial, Georgian, French Provincial, Spanish Colonial. Many were designed by named architects, including a number by the famed St. Louis luxury firm Maritz & Young. The result is residential streets with extraordinary architectural quality — and lighting that, done right, can make those homes genuinely glow at night.

Clayton’s most prized residential neighborhoods include Wydown Forest (small lots, shallow set-backs, exudes a French village character), The Moorlands (a wonderful mix of architecture popular with young professionals), Davis Place (between downtown and Wydown shopping, 1930s construction, $700k-$2M+), and Claverach Park (founded 1926, 210 homes designed by Julius Pitzman across 88 acres with a central park and nine pocket parks). Each has its own character and lighting needs.

Clayton also has an active Architectural Review Board that governs exterior changes to homes. We’re familiar with the ARB process and design lighting that respects neighborhood character and existing ARB guidelines.

Local Considerations:

Clayton blends two distinct markets in one city: high-end residential streets near the country club, and a dense business district with significant commercial lighting needs. Residential projects tend to skew architectural and restrained — overdone lighting reads as out of place on these streets. Permitting and historic-district considerations apply on several blocks.

Our approach

Designed for Clayton

01

Designing for Clayton's architectural pedigree

Many Clayton homes were designed by named architects, including the storied Maritz & Young firm. Our role isn't to add a layer of modern light on top of these designs — it's to use light as a way of revealing what's already there. Warm color temperatures, well-hidden fixtures, restrained beam angles, and lighting placements that respect the home's original design language.

02

Working with Clayton's Architectural Review Board

Clayton's ARB governs exterior changes including some lighting installations. We're familiar with their guidelines and submit documentation when needed. We design with their standards in mind — appropriate materials, proportionate fixtures, and lighting choices that fit the neighborhood character.

03

Compact-lot design (Wydown Forest, Moorlands)

Many Clayton neighborhoods have smaller lots and shallow set-backs — Wydown Forest in particular. That means lighting has to be precisely placed and carefully scaled. A fixture that would disappear in a Town & Country backyard can dominate a Wydown Forest front yard. We design accordingly — smaller fixtures, lower lumens, careful aim.

04

Coordinating Old Webster and Old Orchard patios

Subdivisions like Claverach Park were originally designed as integrated communities with central parks, pocket parks, and pedestrian-friendly street patterns. We design lighting that fits the original community vision — not just the individual home, but the way the home sits within the planned environment.

We work confidently with Clayton's Architectural Review Board

Clayton's ARB governs exterior changes, including some lighting installations. We're familiar with their guidelines, provide documentation and fixture specs for review, and design with their standards in mind — appropriate materials, proportionate fixtures, neighborhood-fitting choices.

We respect named-architect homes (Maritz & Young and beyond)

Many Clayton homes were designed by named architects. Our role isn't to add modern lighting on top — it's to use light to reveal what's already there. Warm 2700K color temperatures, low-profile fixtures, period-appropriate placements.

We design precisely for Clayton's compact lots

Wydown Forest, The Moorlands, parts of Davis Place — many Clayton neighborhoods have smaller lots and shallow set-backs. We use lower-output fixtures, carefully aimed beam angles, and warm color temperatures that don't overwhelm small front yards or spill onto neighbors.

We design with each subdivision's original community vision

Subdivisions like Claverach Park were originally designed as integrated communities — central parks, pedestrian-friendly streets, pocket parks. We design lighting that fits the broader community vision, not just the individual home.
