The town was platted in 1858 along the route of the Pacific Railroad, and according to local history, railroad workers cleared the way for the track, looked at the level land with few rocks and little dirt to move, and cried out “Eureka!” — Greek for “I’ve found it!” The name stuck, and the village grew into one of the most distinctive small cities in western St. Louis County.
